Defenders of the Faith

Released in 1984, Defenders of the Faith represents the culmination of the 'classic' Judas Priest sound established on British Steel and Screaming for Vengeance. Recorded at Ibiza Sound Studios, the album features a production style that is noticeably denser and more aggressive than its predecessors. While Screaming for Vengeance broke them into the American mainstream, Defenders doubled down on the speed and intensity, particularly on tracks like 'Freewheel Burning' which flirted with the emerging thrash metal movement. The album is notable for its thematic variety, ranging from the sci-fi storytelling of 'The Sentinel' to the controversial 'Eat Me Alive,' which famously landed the band on the PMRC's 'Filthy Fifteen' list. Critically, it is often cited as the final chapter of the band's golden trilogy, showcasing the Tipton-Downing guitar duo at their technical peak before the band experimented with guitar synthesizers on the subsequent Turbo.
