Released in 2002, A Cold-Blooded Epitaph served as the critical bridge between the band's demo phase and their landmark debut album, Unhallowed. This EP is historically significant for establishing the 'Black Dahlia sound': a fusion of At the Gates-style melodicism with the speed and lyrical morbidity of American death metal. Recorded before the band signed to Metal Blade Records, the production is more abrasive and less compressed than their later work, which many purists prefer for its organic intensity. The track 'The Blackest Incarnation' would later be re-recorded for their debut, but the versions found here possess a unique, unpolished energy. The inclusion of a 'Paint It Black' cover demonstrates the band's ability to translate non-metal melodies into their high-velocity framework.
