Wedlock

Wedlock is a primary alias for Patrick van Kerckhoven, a foundational figure in the Dutch hardcore and gabber scenes better known as DJ Ruffneck. Operating primarily in the 1990s through his own imprints, Ruffneck Records and Gangsta Audiovisuals, van Kerckhoven used the Wedlock moniker to pioneer the 'Artcore' style.

This sub-genre was distinguished from standard gabber by its more complex breakbeat integration, higher production values, and a signature distorted kick drum that featured a melodic bass tail. His work under this name, particularly tracks like 'Ganjaman' and 'Acid Rain,' became anthems within the global rave community. Critically, Wedlock is respected for maintaining a balance between the commercial accessibility of rave and the dark, industrial textures of underground techno. The project's influence is visible in the evolution of Hardstyle and the contemporary revival of '90s industrial rave aesthetics. While a separate indie-rock entity exists under the same name in the US, the Dutch Wedlock remains the definitive reference point in electronic music history.
