Heavy psychedelic rock that balances fuzzed-out garage energy with soaring, melodic art-pop sensibilities. Gritty, hypnotic, and occasionally explosive.
Wand sounds like a beautiful dream that keeps threatening to turn into a nightmare. They occupy a strange middle ground between the raw, sweat-soaked energy of the California garage scene and the sophisticated, expansive textures of 70s art rock. One moment you are floating through a haze of shimmering synths and Cory Hanson's delicate falsetto, and the next you are being crushed by a wall of distorted guitars and pummeling drums.
What makes them distinctive is their refusal to stay in one lane. While their peers often lean into repetitive motorik beats or straight-ahead punk, Wand treats the studio like a laboratory. They use noise as a melodic instrument, layering tape hiss and oscillating electronics over songs that have the structural integrity of classic pop. It is music that feels both vintage and futuristic, like a lost sci-fi soundtrack recorded on a four-track in a basement.
Start with Golem if you want to hear them at their heaviest and most aggressive. If you prefer something more expansive and experimental, Plum or Laughing Matter show the band evolving into a more collaborative, sophisticated unit. They are the perfect bridge for fans who love the energy of Ty Segall but crave the depth of Radiohead.
