Intro

Listening to Masayoshi Oishi is like being the protagonist of a high-budget musical that takes place in a neon-lit Tokyo. His sound is a masterclass in 'happy' music that doesn't sacrifice technical sophistication. It is built on a foundation of incredible acoustic guitar skill, often using the body of the instrument as a drum, layered with punchy brass sections and soaring, crystal-clear vocals.

What truly sets him apart is his theatricality. He doesn't just sing; he performs with a wink and a smile that translates perfectly through the speakers. Whether he is leaning into funky, syncopated rhythms or massive, orchestral pop choruses, there is a sense of wit and playfulness in every arrangement. It is music that feels physically incapable of being gloomy.

Start with 'Kimi Ja Nakya Dame Mitai' to hear his signature blend of funk-pop and percussive guitar. From there, explore his 'Kariuta' albums to see how he reimagines songs he wrote for others, showcasing his versatility as both a songwriter and a top-tier vocalist.
