Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO) is the creative vehicle for Ruban Nielson, a New Zealand-born musician whose work redefined the lo-fi psychedelic landscape of the 2010s. Originally surfacing as an anonymous Bandcamp project with the track 'Ffunny Ffrends', the project quickly evolved from a bedroom-recording experiment into a full-band powerhouse.

Nielson's sound identity is defined by a 'junkshop' recording philosophy, utilizing vintage gear and home-recording techniques to create a dense, saturated, and highly textured sonic world. His guitar playing is a central pillar, characterized by complex, jazz-influenced chord voicings and agile, bluesy soloing that often contrasts with the murky production. Career-wise, UMO transitioned from the garage-psych of their debut to the polyamory-themed synth-soul of 'Multi-Love', later incorporating elements of krautrock, funk, and even avant-garde jazz on 'IC-01 Hanoi'.
