Warped, psychedelic pop that feels like a lost 1960s transmission filtered through a modern basement. Brittle guitars and dusty tape loops for curious minds.
Tim Presley creates music that sounds like a Polaroid photo of a 1960s psych-rock band left out in the sun until the colors began to bleed. It is inherently nostalgic but deeply strange, favoring the hiss of a four-track recorder and the unpredictable flutter of magnetic tape over modern polish. His work under his own name and as White Fence is a masterclass in 'wonky' pop, where melodies are infectious but the delivery is delightfully off-kilter.
What sets Presley apart is his ability to marry the aggression of his punk roots with a delicate, almost fragile sense of surrealism. His guitars are often thin and jagged, cutting through murky production with a distinctive angularity. There is a sense of restless creativity in every track, as if he is constantly rearranging the furniture of pop music to see what fits in the corners. It is music that feels private, like overhearing a brilliant eccentric talking to himself in the next room.
For those looking to dive in, 'The Wink' offers a more experimental, art-damaged entry point produced by Cate Le Bon, while his work as White Fence provides a more direct line to his garage-psych sensibilities. Start with 'I Have to Feed Larry's Hawk' for a perfect balance of his melodic gifts and his penchant for the bizarre. It is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who prefers their pop music with a bit of grit and a lot of mystery.
