Trout Fishing in America

Witty, warm-hearted folk rock that bridges the gap between children's whimsy and adult sophistication. Acoustic storytelling with a mischievous grin.

Intro

Trout Fishing in America sounds like the best kind of living room jam session. It is built on the sturdy foundation of Keith Grimwood’s nimble upright bass and Ezra Idlet’s bright, percussive guitar work. Their music carries the organic warmth of 1970s folk-rock, but it is delivered with a theatrical, almost vaudevillian energy that makes every song feel like a miniature performance. The production is consistently clean and intimate, prioritizing the natural resonance of their instruments and the tight, intuitive blend of their vocal harmonies.

What truly distinguishes the duo is their refusal to talk down to their younger audience. While the subject matter often leans into the surreal or the silly, the musicality remains sophisticated, drawing on blues, bluegrass, and pop-rock structures. They possess a rare ability to write lyrics that capture the frantic logic of childhood while embedding enough dry, observational wit to keep parents genuinely engaged. It is music that feels lived-in and honest, avoiding the saccharine traps of typical family entertainment in favor of genuine craftsmanship.

Newcomers should start with 'Big Trouble' or 'Family Music Party'. These albums showcase their peak ability to turn mundane domestic moments into catchy, high-energy folk anthems. For those interested in their more traditional folk-rock roots, 'Closer to the Truth' offers a glimpse into their adult-oriented songwriting that still retains their signature warmth and rhythmic drive.

Trout Fishing in America is an American musical duo from Houston, Texas. The members are Keith Grimwood (vocals, bass guitar, upright bass, fiddle) and Ezra Idlet (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, banjo, bouzouki, percussion). Both musicians were previously members of the folk rock band St. Elmo's Fire. They took their name from the novel Trout Fishing in America by Richard Brautigan. The duo has released 24 studio albums through their own label, Trout Records. Trout Fishing in America is known for varied musical styles, with albums alternating between folk rock and children's music, as well as their dynamic stage presence. In addition to their music, Trout Fishing in America holds songwriting workshops with children. Four of their albums have been nominated for Grammy Awards.
