Troublemakers

Troublemakers are a seminal French electronic trio consisting of Fred Berthet, Arnaud Taillefer, and DJ Oil (Lionel Corsini). Emerging from the vibrant cultural hub of Marseille in the late 1990s, they became key figures in the second wave of trip-hop and downtempo.

Their sound identity is defined by a deep reverence for vintage cinema and jazz history, specifically the hard-bop and soul-jazz of the Blue Note era. Their debut album, Doubts & Convictions, released on the Chicago-based Guidance Recordings, garnered international acclaim for its seamless integration of live jazz elements and sophisticated sampling. Following the departure of Berthet, the remaining duo continued to explore the intersection of film and music, culminating in the soundtrack for Express Way, released on the legendary Blue Note label. This move solidified their standing as artists who transcended the 'easy listening' label to become serious jazz-electronic synthesists. Their work is characterized by a 'dusty' sonic palette, utilizing tape saturation and vinyl textures to create a nostalgic yet forward-thinking atmosphere. Critically, they are viewed as a bridge between the Bristol trip-hop sound and the more jazz-focused French touch movement.
