TRACE

Trace was a Dutch progressive rock supergroup formed in 1974 by keyboardist Rick van der Linden following his departure from Ekseption. The band's identity was defined by Van der Linden's conservatory-trained virtuosity and his massive collection of keyboards, including the ARPs, Mellotrons, and even authentic church organs.

Alongside bassist Jaap van Eik and Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden, the group functioned as a high-intensity power trio that bridged the gap between classical music and heavy symphonic rock. Their career arc was brief but impactful, producing three distinct albums: the eponymous debut (1974), 'Birds' (1975), and 'Ladies' (1976), each showcasing a slight evolution toward more complex arrangements and varied instrumentation. Critically, they are often compared to Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Triumvirat, yet Trace is noted for a more rigorous adherence to classical structures and a denser, more 'European' keyboard sound. Despite their technical brilliance, the group dissolved in the late 70s as the prog-rock era waned. They remain a cult favorite among crate diggers and prog-rock historians for their uncompromising technicality and rich analog production.
