Intro

Formed in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1989, Toadies emerged as a pivotal force in the post-grunge era, though their sound was more deeply rooted in the Pixies-esque loud-quiet-loud dynamic than many of their Seattle-influenced peers. Their 1994 debut, Rubberneck, became a multi-platinum success, anchored by the enduring hit 'Possum Kingdom.'

This track exemplified their sound: a blend of odd time signatures, melodic bass-driven grooves, and dark, narrative-driven lyrics. The band's career was marked by a significant hiatus following the departure of bassist Lisa Umbarger in 2001, whose distinctive playing style was considered foundational to their identity. After reforming in 2006, they reclaimed their status as a premier live act in the Texas rock scene, eventually releasing the long-shelved 'Feeler' sessions. Critically, they are respected for maintaining a gritty, authentic edge that avoided the commercial sheen of late-90s radio rock, influencing a generation of Southern alternative bands with their blend of garage rock energy and dark storytelling.
