Candlebox

Candlebox occupies a unique and often debated position in the 1990s rock landscape. Formed in Seattle in 1991, they were the first major success for Madonna's Maverick Records.

While they are frequently categorized as grunge due to their geography and timing, their sound is more accurately described as a bridge between the alternative movement and traditional hard rock. Their debut album was a massive commercial success, certified quadruple platinum, fueled by the ubiquitous singles 'Far Behind' and 'You.' Critically, they were sometimes viewed as latecomers to the Seattle scene, yet their longevity and influence on the subsequent post-grunge explosion (paving the way for bands like Collective Soul and Seven Mary Three) are undeniable. The band's evolution saw them incorporating more experimental and bluesy elements on 'Lucy' and 'Happy Pills' before a hiatus in 2000. Since reuniting in 2006, they have maintained a prolific output, refining a mature rock sound that retains Kevin Martin's signature vocal intensity while exploring more contemporary alternative textures. They remain a staple of rock radio and a testament to the enduring appeal of the Seattle sound's more melodic, soulful side.
