THUMPERS was a London-based indie pop duo consisting of Marcus Pepperell and John Hamson Jr. (formerly of Noah and the Whale).
Emerging in 2012, they quickly gained traction for a sound that synthesized the rhythmic complexity of math-rock with the melodic accessibility of synth-pop. Their sonic identity is characterized by a 'more-is-more' production philosophy, utilizing dense vocal stacking, glockenspiels, and aggressive, floor-tom-heavy percussion. Their debut album, Galore (2014), received critical acclaim for its exuberant energy and sophisticated arrangements, positioning them alongside contemporaries like Friendly Fires and Passion Pit. Over their career, they evolved from the tribal-pop of their debut toward a more polished, electronic-leaning sound on later releases like Whipped & Glazed. Despite their split in 2018, they remain a cult favorite for fans of the 'maximalist indie' movement of the mid-2010s, noted for their ability to balance complex musicality with anthemic, festival-ready songwriting.
