The Orange Peels

Sun-drenched melodies with a sophisticated, slightly melancholic edge. High-fidelity indie pop that feels like a warm California afternoon in the late 1970s.

Intro

The Orange Peels craft a sound that is both impeccably polished and deeply human. It is music that captures the specific, shimmering quality of California light, blending the melodic precision of classic power pop with the expansive, slightly trippy textures of psychedelic rock. Their songs often feel like a long-lost radio hit from a parallel dimension where the 1970s never quite ended.

What truly sets them apart is the architectural quality of their arrangements. Led by Allen Clapp, the band uses their Mystery Lawn studio as an instrument itself, layering lush vocal harmonies over sophisticated chord progressions and warm analog synths. There is a sense of 'eichler-pop' here: clean lines, open spaces, and a seamless integration of indoor comfort and outdoor nature.

Start with 'Square' for their foundational indie-pop sound, or dive into 'Begin the Begone' to hear how they processed a life-altering event through expansive, mountain-air psychedelia. It is the perfect companion for anyone who appreciates the craft of a perfect melody but wants a little more atmosphere and emotional depth than standard pop provides.

The Orange Peels is an American rock band that has its roots in the international indie-pop and indie-rock movements of the 1990s. Over seven albums, the group has extended its pop sensibilities beyond the borders of those genres to explore psychedelia, orchestral pop, progressive rock, and electronic music. The band's music has been compared to artists as varied as Todd Rundgren, Prefab Sprout, The Posies, Big Star, Yes, and R.E.M. Though the band's lineup has changed several times, founding members Allen Clapp and Jill Pries have been the nucleus. Since the summer of 2019, the band has been a trio, made up of Clapp, Pries, and Gabriel Coan.
