The Awakening

The Awakening is the primary creative vehicle for South African musician Ashton Nyte, who founded the project in Johannesburg in 1995. Emerging as the most successful gothic rock act in South Africa, the band bridged the gap between underground subcultures and mainstream festival success.

Nyte’s sound, which he famously dubbed 'dark future rock,' is a sophisticated hybrid of traditional 80s gothic rock (influenced by The Mission and Sisters of Mercy) and 90s industrial and darkwave textures. Throughout their eleven-album career, the project has transitioned from the guitar-heavy foundations of the debut 'Risen' to the synth-pop and New Romantic sensibilities of 'Request,' and finally into a more integrated, polished alternative sound. Now based in the United States, The Awakening maintains a dedicated global following within the goth and industrial scenes.
