Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes is a German gothic rock project formed in 1993 by Melrow and Fred B. Emerging from the fertile German darkwave and alternative scene, the band successfully bridged the gap between traditional 1980s gothic rock (influenced by The Sisters of Mercy and The Mission) and the electronic-heavy 'Schwarze Szene' of the late 1990s.

Their sound identity is defined by a prominent use of drum machines and synthesizers paired with melodic, chorus-laden electric guitars and Melrow's signature baritone vocals. Their career saw significant momentum with the release of 'Fragment' (1998) and 'Homeless' (2000), the latter of which achieved international distribution and chart success in the DAC (German Alternative Charts). Despite label setbacks and lineup changes, including the addition of guitarist Scholli in 2005, the band has maintained a consistent presence in the gothic subculture. Critically, they are respected for their ability to integrate pop structures into a dark, atmospheric framework without sacrificing the emotional depth characteristic of the genre. Their influence is most felt within the European gothic rock circuit, where they remain a staple of festival lineups and dark-alternative playlists.
