Bright, piano-led power pop that feels like a lost 1960s radio hit. Warm melodies and tight harmonies for sunny drives and optimistic mornings.
The 88 specialize in a brand of power pop that feels both instantly familiar and remarkably fresh. Their sound is anchored by prominent, rhythmic piano work and the distinctively elastic vocals of Keith Slettedahl, which often leap into a soulful falsetto. It is music that carries the DNA of the British Invasion but filters it through a bright, modern California lens, resulting in songs that are as catchy as they are well-crafted.
What truly sets them apart is their dedication to the 'classic' song structure. While many of their 2000s contemporaries leaned into garage rock grit or synth-heavy indie, The 88 leaned into melody and arrangement. Their tracks often feature lush vocal harmonies and a warm, analog production quality that makes the instruments feel like they are right in the room with you, avoiding the over-compressed sheen of typical pop rock.
If you are new to the band, start with their 2005 breakout 'Over and Over'. It perfectly encapsulates their ability to blend upbeat, piano-driven energy with a slight undercurrent of wistful nostalgia. It is the kind of music that makes a mundane Tuesday feel like the opening credits of a movie you actually want to watch.
The 88 was an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. The group consisted of Keith Slettedahl (vocals and guitar), Adam Merrin (keyboards and vocals), Anthony Zimmitti (drums and percussion), and Todd O'Keefe (bass and vocals). Meeting in high school in Calabasas, California, Adam Merrin and Keith Slettedahl formed the band in 2002. The band's popularity grew from high-profile song placements in video games, films, commercials, and popular TV shows. From 2010 to 2012, the band toured and recorded with the Kinks leader Ray Davies, serving as his opening act and backing Davies for his set. The band performed with Davies at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2011. They have also performed with Elliott Smith, The Smashing Pumpkins, The B-52's, Elvis Costello, Black Francis, The Zombies, and The Flaming Lips. Their track "At Least It Was Here" is the opening theme song to the television series Community. In 2012, the band co-scored the film Friends with Kids.
