Sun-drenched melodies and effortless vocal harmonies from two indie-pop legends. Warm, jangly, and deeply melodic rock for bright afternoons.
Jonny sounds like a masterclass in the art of the three-minute pop song, filtered through a lens of 1960s sunshine and 1990s indie sensibilities. It is music that feels inherently friendly, built on a foundation of interlocking guitars and a rhythmic bounce that never feels rushed. The production is clean and organic, allowing the natural timbre of the instruments to shine through with a distinct analog warmth that feels like a physical embrace.
What truly distinguishes this project is the vocal chemistry between Norman Blake and Euros Childs. Their voices don't just sit next to each other; they weave together in a way that suggests decades of shared musical DNA. There is a playful, almost whimsical streak to the songwriting - a willingness to embrace odd lyrical turns or sudden psychedelic shifts - without ever losing sight of the central, soaring hook. It is power pop that prioritizes the 'pop' over the 'power,' favoring charm and craft over sheer volume.
Start with their self-titled 2011 album. It is a cohesive statement of intent that captures the duo at their most synchronized. Tracks like 'Candyfloss' and 'Goldmine' serve as perfect entry points, showcasing the band's ability to turn simple melodic phrases into earworms that feel both brand new and comfortably familiar.
Jonny is a two-person band formed by Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. The two bands toured together in 1997 and Blake contributed to the Gorky's Zygotic Mynci album How I Long to Feel That Summer in My Heart (2001). Jonny released an EP in 2006 and their debut album on Merge Records in 2011, the latter of which was recorded with Teenage Fanclub bassist Dave McGowan and BMX Bandits drummer Stuart Kidd. While the band did not release any subsequent albums, Blake and Childs reunited as Jonny for a concert in Strathaven in 2020, a year after Childs had become a member of Teenage Fanclub.
