Aggressive New York hardcore meets high-speed thrash metal. Gritty, street-level energy built for the mosh pit and the weight room.
Sworn Enemy represents a pivotal bridge in the evolution of New York Hardcore (NYHC) into the modern metalcore era. Formed in 1997 under the name Mindset, the band emerged from the Queens scene with a sound that prioritized rhythmic brutality and street-level authenticity.
Led by vocalist Sal Lococo, they quickly became synonymous with the 'beatdown' style of hardcore, characterized by slow, heavy breakdowns designed for high-intensity moshing. Their transition to the name Sworn Enemy coincided with a significant sonic shift; by the time they released 'As Real as It Gets' on Elektra Records in 2003, they had integrated substantial thrash metal elements reminiscent of Exodus and Anthrax. This 'crossover' approach allowed them to tour successfully with both traditional metal acts and hardcore bands. Critically, they are viewed as torchbearers for the aggressive, no-frills side of the genre, avoiding the melodic trends that dominated mid-2000s metalcore in favor of a consistently abrasive and confrontational sound.
