Intro

Superfly sounds like a technicolor explosion of 1970s rock filtered through a modern, high-definition lens. At the center of it all is Shiho Ochi's voice, a force of nature that can shift from a gritty, bluesy growl to a crystalline, glass-shattering belt in a single breath. The music is anchored by heavy guitar riffs, punchy brass sections, and a rhythmic drive that feels both vintage and vital.

What truly distinguishes Superfly in the landscape of Japanese music is the commitment to a classic rock aesthetic that avoids being a mere parody. While many of her peers lean into the polished artifice of J-pop, Ochi leans into the raw, organic warmth of the blues. It is music that prioritizes the 'soul' in soul-rock, utilizing analog textures and live-sounding arrangements to create a sense of massive, physical space.

For those new to her catalog, the self-titled debut or 'Box Emotions' are the essential entry points. These records capture the transition from a duo to a solo powerhouse, showcasing the hits that defined her career. It is the perfect soundtrack for moments when you need to feel invincible, capable of taking on the world with nothing but a loud guitar and a louder voice.

Superfly is a Japanese rock act that debuted on April 4, 2007. Formerly a duo, the act now consists solely of lyricist and vocalist Shiho Ochi with former guitarist Kōichi Tabo still credited as the group's composer and part-time lyricist. Superfly's first two studio albums were certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan, and their first four consecutive albums (the third being classified as a "single" by the group) all debuted at the top of the Oricon Weekly Album Charts, a first for a female recording artist in Japan in over seven years.
