Span was a prominent Norwegian alternative rock band active in the early 2000s, emerging from the remnants of the band Explicit Lyrics. Led by the charismatic Jarle Bernhoft and guitarist Fridtjof Nilsen, the group branded themselves as 'Norwegian Turbo-Rock n Roll Commandos.'
Their sound is a sophisticated blend of hard rock, post-grunge, and melodic alternative rock, distinguished by high production values and Bernhoft's exceptionally versatile, soul-influenced vocals. Their debut album, Mass Distraction (2004), produced by Gil Norton, remains a high-water mark for Norwegian rock exports, achieving significant commercial success in the UK and Norway. Despite a lukewarm reception to their follow-up, Vs. Time, and their subsequent dissolution in 2005, the band's legacy persists through Bernhoft's successful solo career and the members' influence on the Nordic rock scene. They are often grouped with the 'Scandinavian Rock' wave of the era, sharing a sonic lineage with bands like Gluecifer and Turbonegro but with a more polished, alternative edge.
