Span

High-octane Norwegian rock with massive hooks and soulful, gritty vocals. It is the sound of a stadium anthem played in a sweat-soaked basement club.

Intro

Span delivers a brand of rock that feels both massive and incredibly tight. It is built on the foundation of early 2000s alternative rock but injected with a level of technical proficiency and soulfulness that sets them apart from the era's post-grunge pack. The guitars are thick and crunchy, providing a wall of sound that never feels muddy, while the rhythm section drives every track forward with relentless, propulsive energy.

What truly distinguishes Span is the vocal performance of Jarle Bernhoft. Before he became a solo soul sensation, he was a rock powerhouse, capable of delivering raspy, high-energy belts that carry a melodic weight rarely seen in hard rock. The production, often handled by industry heavyweights like Gil Norton, ensures that every snare hit and guitar riff lands with maximum impact, creating an atmosphere of constant, controlled explosion.

Start with their debut album, Mass Distraction. It captures the band at their most hungry and cohesive, featuring tracks that balance radio-ready hooks with a raw, live-wire intensity. It is the perfect entry point for anyone who misses the era when rock music felt both dangerous and meticulously crafted.

SPAN is a Norwegian rock band that formed in 2000 from the remnants of two other outfits, Explicit Lyrics and Squid. Self-proclaimed as "Norwegian Turbo-Rock 'n' Roll Commandos", the band was made up of Jarle Bernhoft on lead vocals and guitar, Fridtjof Nilsen on guitar and backing vocals, Vemund Stavnes on bass and Fredrik Wallumrød on drums and backing vocals. When Stavnes left in 2003, he was replaced by Kim Nordbæk. SPAN spent much of the years between 2002 and 2004 touring the UK and Norway as well as spending a brief time in the US. To date, they have sold over 55,000 albums worldwide. In August 2005, SPAN announced that they were to take an unspecified break. A post on their website at the time stated that the band "no longer share a common dream and ambition" and that they have "decided to end this while we are still the best of friends". In late 2023, the band announced reunion shows at Rockefeller Music Hall in February 2024, twenty years after the release of their debut album.
