Intro

Skillz sounds like the smartest guy in the room who isn't afraid to tell you exactly what's happening behind the curtain. His music is anchored by the classic boom-bap aesthetic: dusty drum breaks, soulful loops, and a crisp, forward-leaning vocal delivery that demands your attention. It's the sound of a battle rapper who transitioned into a master storyteller, maintaining the aggressive precision of the freestyle circuit while developing a keen eye for pop culture absurdity.

What truly sets him apart is his role as hip-hop's unofficial historian and industry whistleblower. Whether he's breaking down the entire year's news in a breathless 'Rap Up' or cheekily hinting at the hits he's written for superstars in 'Ghostwriter,' there is a level of transparency and wit that is rare in the genre. He manages to be both an outsider from Virginia and a deep insider in the industry, giving his music a unique perspective that is simultaneously cynical and celebratory.

Start with 'From Where???' to hear the raw, mid-nineties energy that put him on the map, then move to 'Confessions of a Ghostwriter' for the sharp industry critiques. If you want to see his technical prowess at its most playful, his annual 'Rap Up' series is a mandatory deep dive into the evolution of modern culture through a hip-hop lens.

Donnie Shaquan Lewis (born June 2, 1974), better known by his stage name Mad Skillz (formerly Skillz), is an American rapper. He first became known for his debut album From Where??? (1996), titularly in reference to his origins in Virginia, contrary of the prototypical New York City- or Los Angeles-based rapper at the time. He is also known for his yearly "Rap Ups," which he has done annually since 2002 (except in 2013). Skillz is also the creator of the web series "Hip Hop Confessions", a series of shows that gathers hip hop purists and hip hop lovers alike where they reveal something hip hop related that they have never told anyone. The show has featured Q-Tip, Peanut Butter Wolf, Kwamé and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Skillz earned a 2025 Grammy Nomination for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album for the album The Seven Number Ones. For the 2026 Grammy Awards, he won a Grammy for his album Words For Days Vol. 1 in the Best Spoken Word Poetry Album category.
