Cali Agents

Hard-hitting boom bap that bridges the gap between classic East Coast grit and West Coast lyrical agility. Raw, dusty, and unapologetically independent.

Intro

Cali Agents represent the purest distillation of the late 90s and early 2000s underground hip-hop movement. Their sound is defined by a relentless commitment to the boom bap tradition, characterized by heavy, snapping drums and soulful, often dusty vinyl samples that feel like they were unearthed from a forgotten basement. It is music that prioritizes the craft of the emcee, stripping away commercial polish in favor of raw, authentic energy.

What makes them truly distinctive is the vocal chemistry between Rasco and Planet Asia. They operate with a shared baritone gravity, weaving their verses together with a precision that feels both competitive and collaborative. While they hail from California, their aesthetic rejects the G-Funk tropes of their era, opting instead for a gritty, universal underground sound that resonates with fans of the lyricism-first school of rap.

Newcomers should start with their debut, How the West Was One. It is a landmark independent release that perfectly captures their mission statement: proving that the West Coast could dominate the lyrical, sample-heavy landscape typically associated with New York. It is essential listening for anyone who values the art of the 16-bar verse and the warmth of a perfectly chopped loop.

Cali Agents is an American hip hop group, composed of California-based rappers Keida "Rasco" Brewer and Jason "Planet Asia" Green. First appeared together on Rasco's Time Waits for No Man in 1998, the duo was billed as 'Cali Agents' on the 1999 single "Sophisticated Mic Pro's"/"Blood Brothaz" from Rasco's The Birth EP. They released their debut studio album How the West Was One in 2000, with its lead single "Good Life", which peaked at #36 on the Hot Rap Singles chart in the United States. The group released their first compilation album Rasco & the Cali Agents Presents Hip Hop Classics Vol 1. in 2003, followed by releases of Head of the State (2004) and Fire & Ice (2006). In 2010, Seattle-based clothing company Iller Clothing released the duo's fourth project Close to Cash Pt.1.
