Skaters emerged in 2012 as a transatlantic collaboration that quickly became synonymous with the New York City garage rock revival of the early 2010s. Formed by Michael Ian Cummings and Noah Rubin (formerly of The Dead Trees) alongside Josh Hubbard (The Paddingtons), the band's sound is a sophisticated blend of post-punk revivalism and classic garage rock.
Their debut LP, Manhattan (2014), recorded at the legendary Electric Lady Studios, received critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of urban life and its sharp, angular guitar work. Musically, they draw heavily from the lineage of The Pixies and The Strokes, but infuse it with a faster, skate-punk-influenced tempo. After a stint on Warner Bros. Records, the band transitioned to an independent model for their 2017 follow-up, Rock and Roll Bye Bye, which showcased a more experimental, slightly more psychedelic side of their sound while retaining their signature grit. They remain a cult favorite for fans of the 'slacker rock' and 'surf-punk' movements of the mid-2010s.
