Savages emerged in 2011 as a vital corrective to the perceived softness of the UK indie scene, revitalizing the post-punk template with a severity and technical precision reminiscent of Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Public Image Ltd. Formed by Jehnny Beth and Gemma Thompson, the quartet quickly gained a reputation for their uncompromising aesthetic, which extended from their monochromatic visual identity to their 'no phones' policy at live shows.
Their sound is defined by Fay Milton's relentless percussion and Ayse Hassan's massive, fuzz-drenched basslines, which provide a rhythmic anchor for Thompson's experimental, noise-oriented guitar work. Their debut, Silence Yourself (2013), was a critical landmark, earning a Mercury Prize nomination and establishing them as leaders of a new wave of aggressive, art-leaning rock. Their follow-up, Adore Life (2016), maintained this intensity while expanding their lyrical scope to include a visceral, almost confrontational exploration of romantic love. , though Savages remains distinct for their specific blend of no-wave dissonance and high-art seriousness.
