Roxy Music occupies a singular position in music history as the bridge between the experimentalism of art rock and the commercial polish of New Wave. Formed in 1970 by Bryan Ferry, the group was notable for its high concentration of talent, including Brian Eno, whose early 'treatments' of the band's sound introduced electronic textures to a rock context.
Their early 1970s output was foundational to glam rock, but with a more intellectual, 'pop art' sensibility than their contemporaries. After Eno's departure in 1973, the band moved toward a more melodic, structured sound that eventually culminated in the 1982 masterpiece 'Avalon'. This final era defined the New Romantic and sophisti-pop movements, influencing everyone from Duran Duran to Spandau Ballet. Critically, they are regarded as one of the most influential British bands of all time, cited as a primary inspiration for the punk movement's rejection of prog-rock bloat, despite their own sophisticated arrangements.
