Lustans Lakejer (Lackeys of Lust) are the definitive architects of the Swedish New Romantic movement. Formed in 1978 and led by the enigmatic Johan Kinde, the band evolved from a jagged post-punk outfit influenced by Joy Division and Magazine into a polished, synth-heavy ensemble.
Their 1981-1982 period, particularly the album 'En plats i solen', represents a high-water mark for Swedish pop, blending the art-rock sensibilities of Roxy Music and David Bowie with the emerging electronic textures of the UK's New Romantic scene. The involvement of Japan members Richard Barbieri and Mick Karn provided a direct sonic link to the British avant-pop elite, resulting in a sound characterized by sophisticated arrangements and high production values. Culturally, they introduced an aesthetic of 'dandyism' to the Swedish underground, prioritizing style, travel, and romanticism over the prevailing social realism of the time. Despite a decline in the mid-80s, their 1999 comeback 'Åkersberga' reaffirmed their status as elder statesmen of Swedish pop, influencing subsequent generations of synth-pop and indie artists who value atmosphere and artifice.
