Rough Silk

Rough Silk is a seminal German progressive power metal outfit formed in 1989, led by the multi-instrumentalist Ferdy Doernberg. Their sound identity is defined by the juxtaposition of 'Rough' (heavy, thrash-influenced riffs) and 'Silk' (piano-driven, singer-songwriter sensibilities).

This duality allowed them to carve out a niche in the 1990s European metal scene that was distinct from the more formulaic 'dragon-slaying' power metal of the era. Throughout their career, they have undergone several lineup shifts, most notably the transition from original vocalist Jan Barnett to Thomas Ludolphy, and later a period where vocal duties were shared among members. Their close association with Savatage, having toured with them extensively, reflects their shared penchant for theatrical, piano-heavy metal. -Pop' in later years.
