Tarantula

Tarantula is a foundational pillar of the Portuguese heavy metal scene, formed in 1981 by brothers Paulo and Luís Barros. They hold the distinction of releasing the first domestic heavy metal album in Portugal (1987).

Their sound evolved from a raw, thrash-adjacent heavy metal into a sophisticated power metal style characterized by neoclassical guitar leads and progressive structures. Throughout the 1990s, they bridged the gap between the European power metal explosion (led by bands like Gamma Ray) and the more technical US power metal scene (Helstar, Vicious Rumors). Their cultural impact in Portugal is significant, evidenced by their founding of the 'Rock n School' and their ability to draw massive crowds alongside legends like Deep Purple and Manowar. Critically, they are respected for their longevity and technical consistency, maintaining a high standard of musicianship across four decades without succumbing to fleeting trends. They remain a primary reference point for Iberian metal history.
