Rose Tattoo represents the aggressive apex of the Australian pub rock scene of the late 1970s. Formed in Sydney in 1976, the band was architected by Ian Rilen and Peter Wells to be the 'toughest' band in the country, a vision realized through their heavily tattooed image and uncompromising sound.
Their sonic identity is built on a foundation of heavy blues, distinguished by the prominent use of slide guitar as a primary lead instrument, a rarity in hard rock of that era. Their early work was produced by the legendary team of Harry Vanda and George Young, who applied the same rhythmic discipline they gave to AC/DC but allowed Rose Tattoo a grittier, more distorted edge. Frontman Angry Anderson provided a vocal presence that was part blues shouter, part punk provocateur. Historically, they served as a bridge between traditional blues-rock and the burgeoning NWOBHM movement, influencing a generation of sleaze rock and speed metal bands, most notably Guns N' Roses. Despite various lineup changes and tragedies, the band remains a symbol of working-class Australian defiance and a cornerstone of the ARIA Hall of Fame.
