La Renga is a cornerstone of 'Rock Nacional' and a primary architect of the 'Rock Barrial' (neighborhood rock) movement in Argentina. Formed in 1988 in the Mataderos district of Buenos Aires, the band - led by vocalist/guitarist Gustavo 'Chizzo' Napoli and the Iglesias brothers - established a career defined by radical independence.
They famously manage their own production and distribution, avoiding mainstream media and commercial festivals unless for charitable causes. Their sound is a potent mix of 70s hard rock, heavy blues, and local lyrical sensibilities, influenced by the likes of Pappo's Blues and Steppenwolf. Critically, they are lauded for maintaining a 'pure' rock identity while achieving massive commercial success, selling over a million units without traditional marketing.
