Red Sun Rising emerged from Akron, Ohio, as a significant force in the mid-2010s mainstream rock revival. Formed by Mike Protich and Ryan Williams, the band spent years honing a sound they termed 'Thread,' a metaphor for the diverse musical influences woven into their compositions.
Their breakthrough came with the 2015 album Polyester Zeal, which produced two consecutive number-one singles on the Mainstream Rock chart, a feat rarely achieved by debut artists in the genre. Their sound identity is characterized by a blend of post-grunge dynamics, alternative rock melodies, and a sophisticated approach to vocal harmonies that recalls Alice in Chains but with a more contemporary, radio-ready finish. Critically, they were noted for bringing a higher level of musicianship and vocal range to the active rock format. Despite their commercial success and a prominent feature in Forza Horizon 4, the band entered an indefinite hiatus in 2020, with members splintering into projects like The Violent and New Monarch. They remain a benchmark for modern hard rock that balances aggression with melodic accessibility.
