Ruhrpott AG, commonly known as RAG, stands as a pillar of the 'Golden Era' of German hip-hop, specifically representing the industrial Ruhr region. Formed in 1996 from the merger of Filo Joes and Raid, the group consists of Aphroe, Pahel, Galla, and producer DJ Mr.

Wiz. Their 1998 debut 'Unter Tage' is widely considered a classic of the genre, shifting the focus of German rap toward a more melancholic, abstract, and linguistically complex direction. Their sound is characterized by 'Pott' aesthetics - referencing the coal and steel history of their home - translated into somber, sample-heavy boom bap. Culturally, they provided a counter-narrative to the more commercial 'Stuttgart' sound of the time, favoring grit and intellectual depth. Following their 2001 sophomore effort 'Pottential', the group disbanded in 2003. The death of Galla in 2011 solidified the group's legacy as a finite but profoundly influential chapter in European hip-hop history, influencing a generation of conscious and abstract rappers in Germany.
