Whimsical Welsh psych-pop that feels like a technicolor daydream. Lush arrangements and theatrical vocals for fans of eccentric, melodic storytelling.
Race Horses inhabit a world of technicolor surrealism and baroque elegance. Their sound is a vibrant collision of 1960s pop sensibilities and modern indie-rock experimentation, often anchored by Meilyr Jones's distinctive, theatrical vocal delivery. It feels like a slightly skewed version of the British seaside, where brass bands and fuzzy guitars coexist in perfect, wonky harmony.
What truly sets them apart is their ability to balance high-concept art-pop with genuine melodic warmth. They use orchestral flourishes, glockenspiels, and vintage synths not just as window dressing, but as essential components of their storytelling. Whether singing in Welsh or English, there is a consistent sense of wonder and a slightly eccentric charm that makes their music feel like a hidden gem found in a coastal attic.
Start with 'Furniture' for their most polished, English-language pop statements, then dive into 'Goodbye Falkenburg' to experience the full breadth of their psychedelic Welsh roots. It is music for people who appreciate the intersection of Super Furry Animals' playfulness and Scott Walker's dramatic flair.
Race Horses were a Welsh band based in Cardiff, Wales and originally from Aberystwyth. Formed in 2005 as Radio Luxembourg, they changed their name in 2009 due to possible legal problems with the radio station of the same name. Initially the majority of their music was in Welsh, but their final album Furniture was entirely in English. After appearing across Wales and during the debut Festival N°6, the band announced their split in January 2013 and performed a farewell gig the following month at Clwb Ifor Bach.
