Dusty, piano-led psych-pop that feels like a half-remembered childhood dream. Intimate lo-fi melodies for quiet afternoons and solitary reflection.
Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't sounds like a collection of secrets whispered into a four-track recorder in a room full of vintage keyboards. The music is anchored by Peter Erchick's distinctive piano playing, which often carries a slightly detuned, honky-tonk quality that feels both antique and immediate. It is a sonic world where psychedelic flourishes meet the structural simplicity of a nursery rhyme, all wrapped in a warm blanket of tape hiss and gentle analog saturation.
What makes this project distinctive is its ability to be simultaneously whimsical and deeply melancholic. While it shares the experimental DNA of the Elephant 6 collective, it trades the chaotic maximalism of its peers for a more grounded, song-oriented intimacy. The arrangements are clever but never showy, using brass, woodwinds, and layered vocals to create a sense of 'chamber lo-fi' that feels like a private performance just for the listener.
Start with the album Individualized Shirts. It is the definitive statement of the project's sound, moving from catchy, piano-driven indie pop to abstract soundscapes without ever losing its emotional core. It is the perfect companion for those moments when you want to feel connected to something small, beautiful, and slightly strange.
Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't is a project of The Olivia Tremor Control keyboardist Peter Erchick. Conceived in the early 1990s, their first album was not released until July 2001. The band's name may be from a chapter in a children's encyclopedia. When the members of the Olivia Tremor Control split into their various projects following the release of their Black Foliage album, Erchick submitted a track to a Jandek tribute compilation under this name. In 2001, Erchick released the first album of this project, Individualized Shirts, originally on Cloud Recordings. A United States tour in 2002 with Circulatory System followed, along with a self-released tour album called Special Fanfare for Anything. Orange Twin Recordings re-released Individualized Shirts in 2003. In 2011, they revealed the album "Lost in the Pancakes."
