Partibrejkers

Gritty, bassless garage rock with a defiant Belgrade edge. Raw blues riffs meet punk attitude for a sound that feels like a cigarette lit in a dark alley.

Intro

Partibrejkers sound like the absolute essence of rock and roll stripped of all its vanity. It is music born from the pavement of Belgrade, characterized by a sharp, biting guitar interplay that famously functioned without a bass player in their early years. The sound is lean, muscular, and unapologetically raw, blending the primitive stomp of The Stooges with the rhythmic swagger of British rhythm-and-blues. It feels like a live wire, crackling with a nervous, urban energy that is both dangerous and deeply grounded.

What truly sets them apart is the charismatic, confrontational delivery of frontman Cane. His vocals are less about singing and more about a rhythmic, street-wise sermonizing, delivering lyrics that cut through social hypocrisy and existential dread with surgical precision. The chemistry between his deadpan intensity and Anton’s jagged, bluesy guitar work creates a tension that never quite resolves, keeping the listener on edge and fully engaged in the band's uncompromising vision of freedom.

If you are new to the band, start with their self-titled 1985 debut. It is a masterclass in minimalist garage punk that defined an entire generation of Yugoslav rock. From there, move to 'Kiselo i slatko' to hear how their sound evolved with more complex textures while maintaining their signature bite. This is music for when you need to feel invincible, honest, and completely awake to the world around you.

Partibrejkers (Serbian Cyrillic: Партибрејкерс, transliteration for: Partybreakers) is a Serbian rock band from Belgrade, as well as one of the most acclaimed acts of the Yugoslav rock scene. The band was formed in 1982 and released its first album, Partibrejkers I in 1985 in a two guitars, drums and vocal set (no bass guitar). The band has experienced numerous line-up changes. The mainstays of the band are Zoran Kostić "Cane" (vocals) and Nebojša Antonijević "Anton" (guitar). The band has received steady critical acclaim over the years and is well received by audiences across former Yugoslavia, not only for their music, but also for their anti-war activism through the Rimtutituki project. Their influences are diverse, such as the Stooges, MC5, early Rolling Stones and New York Dolls, combined with blues, British rhythm-and-blues, rockabilly and classic rock and roll.
