Noothgrush is a seminal fixture of the 1990s California sludge and crust scene, formed in San Jose in 1994. Founded by Gary Niederhoff and Chiyo Nukaga, the band quickly established a reputation for playing at agonizingly slow tempos with an emphasis on extreme low-end frequencies, often utilizing two bass players to achieve a denser sound.

Their trajectory is closely linked to the DIY hardcore and metal underground, evidenced by their prolific output of split releases with peers like Corrupted, Dystopia, and Gasp. This collaborative spirit placed them at the heart of a global network of 'miserabilist' heavy music. Critically, they are regarded as one of the few bands to successfully bridge the gap between the nihilism of crust punk and the atmospheric weight of doom metal.
