Mouse on Mars

Mouse on Mars, the duo of Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma, represents the vanguard of German post-techno experimentation.

Emerging in the early 1990s, they moved away from the rigid minimalism of Kraftwerk towards a more chaotic, 'organic' electronic sound. Their work is characterized by high-density production, often featuring over twenty layers of percussion per track, and a signature use of cross-frequency modulation. Unlike many of their IDM peers who focused on cold, mathematical structures, Mouse on Mars integrated live brass, strings, and drums, creating a hybrid aesthetic that bridges the gap between avant-garde jazz, dub, and glitch. Their career arc shows a restless evolution, from the ambient-leaning 'Vulvaland' to the pop-deconstruction of 'Autoditacker' and the AI-collaborative experiments of 'AAI'.
