Electric guitars meeting ancient melodies in a haze of 1970s fuzz. Anatolian psych-rock that feels like a cinematic journey across the Turkish steppes.
Moğollar is the foundational architect of Anatolian Rock, a movement that fused Turkish folk music with Western psychedelic and progressive rock. Formed in 1967, the band sought to prove that the dynamism of traditional Anatolian melodies was inherently compatible with the energy of modern pop and rock.
Their early work is characterized by the innovative use of keyboards by Murat Ses and the distinctive electric guitar and bağlama work of Cahit Berkay. In 1971, they achieved significant international recognition by winning the Grand Prix du Disque, placing them on the same critical plane as contemporary giants like Jimi Hendrix. Throughout the 1970s, they collaborated with legendary vocalists like Barış Manço, Cem Karaca, and Selda Bağcan, effectively serving as the 'house band' for the golden age of Turkish psych. After a long hiatus starting in the late 70s, they reformed in 1993, continuing to perform and record with a focus on social commentary and preserving their unique ethno-rock heritage. Their influence is immeasurable, providing the blueprint for modern psych-revival acts like Altın Gün and Gaye Su Akyol.
