A frantic collision of circuit-bent synths and hyper-speed drumming. Aggressive, chaotic noise rock for those who find peace in total sonic overload.
This is the sound of a computer having a nervous breakdown while a world-class drummer tries to keep up. It is dense, unrelenting, and physically demanding music that occupies every available frequency. The interplay between the distorted, squelching electronics and the manic, tribal percussion creates a wall of sound that feels both prehistoric and futuristic.
What sets this apart is the sheer kinetic energy. While many noise artists rely on static drones, Mindflayer is constantly in motion. The rhythms are complex and jagged, shifting under the weight of feedback and electronic chirps. It is the musical equivalent of a high-speed chase through a neon-lit scrap yard, where the danger is part of the appeal.
Start with 'Expedition to the Hairier Peaks' to hear the duo at their most cohesive. It captures the frantic spirit of the Providence underground scene, offering a masterclass in how to turn pure noise into a compelling, rhythmic experience. It is not for the faint of heart, but for those who crave intensity, it is essential.
Mindflayer is a noise rock band from Providence, Rhode Island, made up of Brian Chippendale (of Lightning Bolt) and Mat Brinkmann (of Forcefield) which was formed out of Fort Thunder. Much of Mindflayer's identity, including the band name, are obscure Dungeons & Dragons references. The name of the band refers to psionic creatures in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, Illithids, commonly referred to as "mind flayers." The covers of Take Your Skin Off and Die & Mold Services also resemble the Illithid's squid-like faces. The title to the band's fourth album, Expedition to the Hairier Peaks, plays on the popular Dungeons & Dragons module title, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. Mat Brinkman uses a circuit bent analog synthesizer.
