Intro

MC Lars delivers a hyper-literate, high-energy experience that feels like a college literature seminar crashed into a Warped Tour stage. The sound is defined by its 'post-punk laptop rap' aesthetic, utilizing punchy digital drums and clever samples from indie and punk icons. It is music that celebrates being a fan, whether of Edgar Allan Poe or obscure emo bands, delivered with a rapid-fire flow and a self-aware wink.

What truly sets him apart is the 'lit-hop' element. While many rappers focus on street narratives or wealth, Lars builds tracks around Moby Dick, the Raven, and the complexities of the music industry. The production is bright and often frantic, mirroring the information-heavy age he helped name. It is a sonic blend that rewards listeners who pay attention to the footnotes while still wanting to jump around.

Start with 'The Graduate' or 'The Laptop EP' to hear the foundation of his sound. These projects perfectly capture the intersection of academic curiosity and DIY punk spirit. It is the ideal entry point for anyone who loves hip-hop but grew up on a steady diet of Green Day and library cards.

Andrew Robert Nielsen (born October 6, 1982), known professionally as MC Lars, is an American rapper, producer, educator, and founder of Horris Records. A graduate of Stanford University and the University of Oxford, he has been described as a pioneer of "lit-hop", a genre blending hip-hop with themes from classical and American literature. In a 2003 song, he used the term "iGeneration", which ASCAP credited as an early instance of the term. He has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall and multiple TEDx events. His work frequently references authors like William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and Herman Melville, and he is considered a key figure in the early nerdcore movement.
