Sultry, multilingual trip-hop that weaves African rhythms into cool European electronica. Deeply cinematic and perfect for late-night introspection.
Métisse creates a sound that feels like a bridge between continents, suspended in the cool air of a midnight studio. It is characterized by the interplay between Aïda Bredou's fluid, multilingual vocals and Skully's sophisticated electronic production. The music moves with a slow, deliberate pulse, borrowing the heavy low-end of dub and the atmospheric tension of 90s Bristol trip-hop, but infusing it with a warmth that feels organic rather than mechanical.
What truly sets them apart is the linguistic and rhythmic diversity. Hearing Dioula, French, and English interwoven over downtempo beats creates a sense of 'placelessness' that is both exotic and deeply comforting. The percussion often leans into African polyrhythms, but they are smoothed out by lush synthesizers and a production style that prioritizes mood and texture over dancefloor aggression.
Start with the single 'Boom Boom Bâ' to hear their most iconic blend of melody and atmosphere. It captures the essence of the early 2000s 'café del mar' aesthetic but with a much deeper soul and more complex cultural DNA than its contemporaries.
Métisse is an Irish/African soul/electronica band, formed by former Chapter House member Skully, and Aïda Bredou, a singer/choreographer from Côte d'Ivoire. They formed in Toulouse, France. The band's name is the French word for 'a girl or woman of mixed racial heritage', and its music is a mix of African, Celtic, soul and electronic music. Song lyrics often feature a mixture of Dioula, English and French words. The band achieved initial success with the single "Sousoundé". Its next hit, "Boom Boom Bâ" was the featured title track in Madonna's film The Next Best Thing and was played several times in the Showtime TV series Dead Like Me. It was also occasionally played as a bumper music song on the international radio program Coast to Coast AM, by founder Art Bell. In addition, "Nomah's Land" was played in the Dead Like Me second season episode "The Shallow End". They released two new singles in 2013, "You Are Beautiful" and "I See People". Métisse's music has been licensed for numerous television, film productions and advertising campaigns. They have two albums, My Fault and Nomah's Land, though their music has been licensed for several compilation discs.
