Soulstice

Lush, jazz-inflected downtempo that feels like a velvet sofa in a dimly lit lounge. Sophisticated electronic soul for late nights and quiet rain.

Intro

Soulstice creates a sound that is the musical equivalent of a silk scarf: smooth, expensive-feeling, and effortlessly elegant. Their music occupies the sweet spot between the smoky trip-hop of Bristol and the sun-drenched, sophisticated house music of the San Francisco underground. It is defined by Gina Rene's breathy, soulful vocals which float over a bed of warm Rhodes pianos, crisp breakbeats, and subtle turntable textures.

What truly sets them apart is their ability to blend organic jazz sensibilities with a polished electronic sheen. While many of their contemporaries in the late 90s and early 2000s leaned into grit or irony, Soulstice leaned into beauty. Their production is meticulously layered, featuring syncopated rhythms that nod to bossa nova and drum and bass without ever losing their chillout core.

Start with the album 'Illusion'. It is a definitive document of the Om Records era, capturing a moment when electronic music felt both futuristic and deeply human. Tracks like 'Lovely' and 'Wind' showcase their signature mix of melodic songwriting and atmospheric depth, making it the perfect entry point for anyone seeking music that is both relaxing and intellectually engaging.

Soulstice is a downtempo/electronic soul band that is a part of the US based record label Om Records and later to Uno Recordings. The band started after a collaboration between Gabriel Rene and Andy Caldwell in 1995. The band was composed of Rene (vocals), Gabriel Rene (keyboards), Mei-Lwun (DJ turntable) and Caldwell (keyboards and producer). They are influenced by jazz, blues, neo-soul, drum and bass, hip hop, and bossa nova. Gina and Gabriel Rene are the sister and brother of US The X Factor season 1 contestant and second runner-up Chris Rene. Caldwell has gone on to perform solo and producing artists through Uno Recordings, a music producing label that he established in 2004. Soulstice has released three albums: Illusion (2001), its accompanying remix album Mixed Illusions (2001), and In the Light (2011).
