Love Is Colder Than Death

Love Is Colder Than Death (LICTD) is a seminal German neoclassical darkwave ensemble formed in 1990 in Leipzig. They emerged as a cornerstone of the 'Heavenly Voices' movement, a subgenre characterized by ethereal, classically-trained female vocals set against dark, atmospheric backdrops.

The band's early work on Hyperium Records helped define the aesthetic of 90s gothic-ambient music, blending neo-medieval percussion with electronic synthesis. Their debut album, Teignmouth, was historically significant as the first release for Metropolis Records, a label that would go on to dominate the North American industrial and darkwave market. Following the departure of founding member Ralf Donis, the group's sound shifted from experimental rhythmic structures toward a more formal neoclassical and world-music influenced style. They are frequently compared to Dead Can Dance due to their use of dual-gender vocal counterpoint and archaic instrumentation, yet they maintain a distinctively 'German' darkwave identity through their use of colder, more synthetic textures. Critically, they are respected for their longevity and their ability to maintain a high-art aesthetic within the gothic subculture, performing at prestigious events like the Bach Festival Leipzig.
