Love as Laughter

Loose, melodic indie rock with a basement-born heart. Shambolic guitars and raspy vocals create a warm, slightly frayed sound for long drives and quiet afternoons.

Intro

Love as Laughter sounds like the best band you ever stumbled upon in a damp basement in 1990s Olympia. There is a persistent sense of casual brilliance here, where melodies feel discovered rather than manufactured. The guitars have a distinctive jangle that is often coated in a fine layer of grit, and the drums provide a steady, unpretentious backbone that keeps the songs from drifting too far into the ether.

What makes Sam Jayne's project truly distinctive is the balance between slacker-rock nonchalance and genuine emotional weight. His vocals are delivered with a raspy, conversational ease that makes every lyric feel like a secret shared between friends. It is music that embraces its own imperfections, using tape hiss and slightly out-of-tune strings to build an atmosphere of intimate, analog warmth that modern digital production rarely captures.

If you are looking for a place to start, Holy is the essential gateway, showcasing a more polished but still wonderfully eccentric side of the band. For those who want to hear the raw, lo-fi roots of the Pacific Northwest indie scene, Destination 2000 offers a perfect snapshot of their early, more experimental energy.

Love as Laughter was an American indie rock band from Olympia, Washington. The band was formed in 1994 by vocalist and guitarist Sam Jayne as a solo project following the break-up of his previous band, Lync. In 2008, the band signed with Isaac Brock's label Glacial Pace and released the album Holy. At the time, the band featured Jayne, Ivan Berko on bass, Zeke Howard on drums, Andy Macleod on guitar and Robbie Lee on keyboards. Jayne was found dead on December 15, 2020, at the age of 46.
