Loop Guru

A kaleidoscopic blend of traditional global instruments and 90s electronic pulses. Hypnotic worldbeat that feels like a spiritual journey through a digital bazaar.

Intro

Loop Guru sounds like a transmission from a future where every culture on Earth has finally learned to dance together. Their music is a dense, shimmering tapestry of sounds: you might hear the metallic chime of an Indonesian gamelan one moment and a heavy, dub-influenced bassline the next. It is deeply rhythmic but rarely aggressive, preferring to wrap the listener in a warm, psychedelic cocoon of global samples and found sounds.

What truly sets them apart is their 'Global Village' philosophy. Unlike many ambient acts that use world music as mere window dressing, Loop Guru treats every sample as a vital piece of a larger spiritual puzzle. They masterfully bridge the gap between the ancient and the digital, using 90s breakbeats and synthesis to provide a modern framework for traditional chants and acoustic instruments. It is music that feels both deeply rooted in history and untethered from time.

To get the full experience, start with 'Duniya'. It is their definitive statement, capturing the perfect balance between their dancefloor energy and their more meditative, atmospheric tendencies. It is the kind of record that rewards deep listening on high-quality headphones, revealing new layers of hidden voices and subtle percussion with every spin.

Loop Guru is a worldbeat group consisting of bassist/guitarist Salman Gita (born Sam Dodson) and programmer Jamuud (born David Muddyman). They first met around 1980 and initially played together in The Transmitters and released their debut single as Loop Guru, "Shrine", in 1992. The band's music is a melange of Asian and Western music, infusing Western dance beats with the rich textures and sounds of Indonesian gamelan and traditional Indian music. Heavy emphasis is placed on electronic samples of traditional instruments, voices, and miscellaneous sounds. Loop Guru's main exuberant oeuvre of lively rhythms and effusive sounds is occasionally punctuated by more contemplative albums (e.g., The Third Chamber) that are reminiscent and influenced by ambient music and similar to musical artists such as Brian Eno and Jon Hassell. Past and present guest musicians and collaborators include Natacha Atlas, Sussan Deyhim, Mad Jym, Count Dubulah (also known as Nick Page, Psycho Karaoke and Dub Colossus) and Cat von Trapp. Their single "Paradigm Shuffle", one of their more popular releases, was built around "I Have a Dream", Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 speech. Muddyman died on 27 March 2022.
