High-tension progressive metal defined by soaring falsetto, surgical rhythmic precision, and cinematic synths. Intense, theatrical, and deeply emotional.
Leprous sounds like the intersection of technical mastery and raw, nervous energy. Their music is built on a foundation of interlocking, staccato rhythms that feel like a ticking clock, topped with Einar Solberg’s unmistakable vocals that glide effortlessly from breathy whispers to glass-shattering operatic heights. It is a sound that is both meticulously engineered and emotionally volatile.
What sets them apart is their evolution from extreme metal roots into a sophisticated art-rock entity that uses space and silence as effectively as distortion. They favor unusual harmonies and rhythmic displacements that keep the listener slightly off-balance, creating a sense of constant forward motion. The drumming is particularly distinctive, providing a hyper-active, mechanical heartbeat to songs that often feel like grand, tragic theater.
Start with 'The Congregation' if you want to hear their peak rhythmic complexity, or 'Pitfalls' if you prefer a more melodic, synth-heavy exploration of personal struggle. Both albums showcase their ability to make high-concept progressive music feel deeply intimate and urgent.
Leprous is a Norwegian progressive metal band formed in 2001 by singer and keyboardist Einar Solberg and guitarist Tor Oddmund Suhrke. After releasing several demos with relatively unstable lineups, the band released their first studio album, Tall Poppy Syndrome, in 2009. They subsequently gained prominence as the live backing band of Ihsahn (who is Solberg's brother-in-law), who, in turn, contributed on several Leprous records as guest singer or producer. Their acclaimed 2011 album Bilateral led to further attention. After two albums which followed a similar musical direction, Coal (2013) and The Congregation (2015), Leprous took a less metal, more rock-oriented approach with Malina (2017), their first record not to feature harsh vocals. The band further experimented on 2019's Pitfalls, which mixes art rock, pop and progressive influences into their established sound. Leprous released their seventh studio album, Aphelion, in 2021, and their eighth studio album titled Melodies of Atonement in 2024. Their albums have received mostly positive reviews.
