Witty, self-aware hip-hop that balances sarcastic social commentary with vulnerable introspection. Smart boom bap for the thinkers and the skeptics.
John Reuben sounds like the smartest, most anxious person at the party who eventually decides to just make fun of himself to break the ice. His music is built on a foundation of classic boom bap rhythms, but it is frequently interrupted by indie-rock guitar stabs, quirky synth lines, and a vocal delivery that sits somewhere between a traditional rap flow and a dry, deadpan conversation. It is rhythmic and catchy, yet it possesses an inherent restlessness that keeps it from ever feeling like standard radio fare.
What truly sets him apart is his refusal to play the role of the untouchable emcee. While his peers might project bravado, Reuben leans into his neuroses, using sarcasm and satire to explore themes of identity, faith, and the absurdity of the music industry. He has a knack for writing hooks that feel like pop songs but lyrics that feel like a private journal entry, creating a tension between the upbeat production and the often somber, self-critical subject matter.
For those new to his catalog, Hindsight is the essential starting point. It captures his transition from a clever battle rapper into a sophisticated songwriter who isn't afraid to use a banjo or a distorted guitar loop if it serves the song. It is the perfect introduction to his specific brand of 'cynical optimism' and his unique position as an outsider within both the hip-hop and religious music scenes.
