Intro

Piotta sounds like the heartbeat of Rome's outskirts. His music is built on a foundation of classic boom bap, but it is infused with a distinctly Italian swagger that ranges from the cartoonish energy of his early hits to the moody, atmospheric textures of his later soundtrack work. You can hear the influence of funk and vintage Italian pop in the samples, creating a sound that feels both rooted in hip-hop tradition and deeply tied to his local identity.

What makes him distinctive is his use of the 'coatto' persona and Roman dialect, turning local slang into a rhythmic tool. While his early career was defined by satirical, high-energy party anthems that dominated the charts, his evolution into a veteran statesman of the scene has brought a more contemplative, social-conscious edge to his writing. He manages to be both the life of the party and a sharp-eyed observer of the city's darker corners.

Start with 'Comunque vada sarà un successo' to experience the raw, playful energy that made him a household name. If you prefer something more modern and cinematic, his work on the 'Suburra' soundtrack shows his ability to craft tense, atmospheric urban narratives that feel like a midnight drive through a dangerous city.

Tommaso Zanello (born 26 April 1973), known by his stage name Piotta, is an Italian rapper. Piotta, which in Roman dialect means "100 liras", became famous with his song "Supercafone" which describes the coatto (Roman suburban impolite, politically incorrect chav). Piotta's single "La Mossa del giaguaro" hit #15 on the Italian charts in 2000. Now considered a "veteran" of Italian hip hop, Piotta set up a record label, La grande onda, with a focus on emerging Italian musicians. In 2015, he worked with Afrika Bambaataa for his album "Nemici".
